LGA executive pay – a small win for RBWM

Posted by davidburbage on November 23, 2010

On Friday and yesterday we canvassed a number of councils about the £300k salary package that the LGA’s Chief Exec enjoys – that had been criticised by Grant Shapps as unacceptable…

So we wrote a letter to The Times

Sir,

The Local Government Association’s decision to award a £70,000 pay rise to John Ransford, its chief executive, is simply not acceptable in the current climate. Town halls up and down the country are having to make tough decisions on cuts as funding shrinks. For the LGA to pay its chief executive £302,840, double that of the Prime Minister, shows a complete lack of regard to its members and their finances; after all, this is taxpayers’ money.

The LGA should be leading by example. Some have argued that Mr Ransford should take a 10 per cent pay cut. We suggest that this should be the starting point.

We found a great deal of support from colleagues who are facing really tough decisions about expenditure – and presumably the LGA’s use of member council’s subs will be part of budget discussions up and down the land.

To their credit, the LGA have not only suggested reduced subscriptions and costs, but also today have brought forward an internal restructuring exercise – including reducing the costs of their CEO !  :

“We are determined to represent our sector robustly, effectively and at a reasonable cost to councils at a time of immense financial pressures.”

Credit where credit is due

Posted by davidburbage on November 22, 2010

The Taxpayers Alliance are giving us the lead credit on the Council non-jobs story :

Our recent report on non-jobs highlighted climate change officers as posts that could easily be dispensed with. Councils could take a lead from Windsor and Maidenhead Council who do not employ climate change officers. Instead it bought smart meters and energy consumption fell by 15%. Instead of wasting money, Windsor and Maidenhead saved money.

How Labour destroyed the UK by borrowing from unborn children

Well worth viewing – a clear description of the deep mess we are in financially. . . . . (you have to watch a few adverts before it starts, but you won’t then stop watching!)
