The County of Staffordshire

Posted by davidburbage on August 18, 2008

According to the BBC, looks like this :

Notice the ‘hole’ in the county. This is the unitary authority of Stoke-on-Trent, which is surely still in the county of Staffordshire although not under the administration of the County council.

Given that Berkshire has 6 unitary authorities, are we one big hole ? Or six contiguous holes? Does the county still exist?

Answers on a postcard …

Waterfall

Spent the weekend in North Wales in the rain. That did mean that the waterfall at Aber Falls had plenty of water to fall.

Moving around the constituency

Posted by davidburbage on August 4, 2008

Gordon Brown is copying us again. Just like he did with the let’s-fly-the-Union-Jack-flag-from-Govt-buildings a week after we started doing it, he’s now proposing to have his Cabinet meeting outside London.

We hold our Cabinet and Council meetings alternately between Windsor and Maidenhead, and once a year we hold a ‘somewhere else’ meeting. Last year it was fortunate to have this at the Thames Valley Athletic Centre as we had a big crowd for the Eton/Eton Wick Park & Ride debate. This year I believe we’re going somewhere south in the Borough – probably in October.

[Actually GB is more likely to be copying the SNP Government of Scotland. The point is the same – he’s a follower not a leader….]

Maidenhead at the Movies

Posted by davidburbage on August 2, 2008

Town Manager Steph James organised and ran this remarkably successful event last Friday-Sunday. Good weather throughout, a fantastic free time.

I went with a younger member of the family on Sunday to see Chitty Chitty Bang Bang¬†which was great; hadn’t seen it in probably 25 years or more and had forgotten lots of bits.

bangbang

Oh you pretty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
We love you.
And, in
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
What we’ll do.
Near, far, in our motor car
Oh what a happy time we’ll spend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
Bang Bang Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Our fine four fendered friend.
