Conservatives Winning Here

Posted by davidburbage on June 28, 2008

What amuses me about Libdem posters at election time is that they say “winning here” when in fact they are losing. It carries a certain arrogance to say that they have the endorsement of the local people when the whole point of an election is to determine that endorsement. But I digress.

I was delighted on polling day not to be allocated to the streets of Henley as I have been previously, but I was subcontracted to Sonning Common who sub-subcontracted me to the quaint small village of Gallowtree Common. It was excellent wandering around a place that felt like archetypal England. If you ignored the BMWs, the Maserati and the Mercedes then one could have been back a hundred years….. or more. Lovely place.

Just another street poster location for John Howell

More on Henley

Posted by davidburbage on June 24, 2008

Nice town. Lots of character and nooks and crannies where houses were slotted in around the turn of the century. Wouldn’t be allowed nowadays (access ! turning circles ! parking !) but these places are really desirable. There’s a disconnect there.

Curses, met a voter with a Monster Raving Loony leaflet which she was gushing about – she enjoyed it so much she said it kept her laughing throughout breakfast. Didn’t manage to convince her to hand it over so I am still short of the Monster Raving Loony election leaflet in my collection. Plenty of Con/Lab/Lib/UKIP/BNP/Green in collection from many campaigns, but still missing Loony. Sounds like they are worth having !

Saw Nigel Farage (UKIP leader) smoking a cigarette on a backstreet. Big UKIP rally yesteraday at the Market Sq town hall.

Taxpayers money

This post at Conservative Home illustrates nicely the position that has been engineered with respect to local services funding. A problem that needs fixing, certainly.

Out in sunny Henley this afternoon on the by-election trail …. here’s me with some leaflets, and some Libdems trying to work out what to do next …

Has Ireland done it ? edit: Yes!

Posted by davidburbage on June 13, 2008

Has the free world been saved by the plucky Irish?

edit : Yes they have !

By the way, the guy in the picture is one of the pilots that blew up the second death star  in Star Wars – my crude analogy to the second Imperial assault vessel (the earlier Death Star being the original Constitution defeated by the French and Dutch) held at bay by a small unit of fighters.

Petrol Prices (3)

Posted by davidburbage on June 13, 2008

Was up to 118.9, now 119.9

Any guesses where this will end up?

I can’t understand why the price never fell when the dollar weakened against the pound – but I’m not an expert on international petroleum markets…

Maidenhead’s coming back!

Posted by davidburbage on June 9, 2008

Attended the Carnival evening session tonight on a boat with other sponsors to watch the band (on the other side of the river) and fireworks – very enjoyable. Good to have the Carnival running again and next year can be bigger and better!

The band had Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Junior and Dean Martin singing with them – spectacular success for the committee in securing such international stars to perform.

In other news, the ING investment in Maidenhead has been highlighed in the property press quoting Bob Dulson the PRoM chairman.

And it’s sunny today.

Vindictive government

Posted by davidburbage on June 1, 2008

I find it hard to believe that Labour politicians can sleep at night with their wicked NHS policy.

In today’s Sunday Times, it is revealed that Labour make the NHS refuse treatment if a sick person is able and foolish enough to pay for drugs not available on the NHS. This is the worst case of moralising left-wing evilness I have come across from this Government, punishing people (who, let’s not forget, have paid for the NHS) who are seeking to save their own lives because the Government cannot afford to. Can’t do that! We’ll send you the bills for your treatment from your NHS if you do that, cursed patients.

Labour are now penalising people with advanced cancer who are trying simply to preserve their own lives.

This is like the Government saying that if I pay for extra tuition for my children, then they will make me pay (twice) for state education.

If I buy aspirin, will the NHS refuse to treat any headaches I may have?

Stupid, misguided and wrong. Even Liberal Democrats wouldn’t do this. (probably)
