Oil price rises

Posted by davidburbage on May 22, 2008

Even my kids have noticed the numbers going ‘up’ at the local garage. A penny every other day – 111.9 , 112.9 , 113.9 114.9.

I remember in the early seventies when I was still in single figures seeing the price then go up from 33p / gallon, 34p / gallon … eerie similarities.

$135 a barrel – to think we were worried about far lower prices during the Iraq conflict!

Annual Councils

Posted by davidburbage on May 19, 2008

In the world of UK local authorities, each year the Council appoints the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor, the Leader of the Council and usually all the committee places and panels. As ever, starting with the Mayor, there is a knock-on effect of who gets what where.

This process is bad for the Leader because sometimes people don’t end up with quite as much, or quite exactly what they wanted. Ploughing a straight course which upsets the fewest number of people whilst still retaining the best line-up for residents is not easy. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it! Not as tough as being in the army though. My friend Cllr Bicknell presented me with a mounted photo of me & the mayor and the troops (see earlier blog). Can’t decide whether to put it up at the Town Hall or at home…

Eventful week this week, more to come

Posted by davidburbage on May 10, 2008

Have not stopped this week – met up again with Recyclebank who visited us in Windsor, more ideas and plans are being analysed. And 5 dinners in 3 days; Thursday I was lucky enough to be invited to be in the Royal Box for the Windsor Tattoo (which was excellent) meeting with the new and old Lord Lieutenants of Berkshire and the new High Sheriff; the Princess Royal took the salute. Yesterday I was on parade at the Guildhall as we presented the ex-Chief Exec of the Royal Borough David Lunn with his Freedom of the Borough, and had a nice meal. Someone spilt their food, but the wine was good. Today I am going to Ascot and with some other councillors expect to network again. There are often many of the same faces at these functions!

Red team win, Blue team suffer

Posted by davidburbage on May 4, 2008

Leicester went down to the third tier of English football for the first time in their 124-year history.

Southampton beat Sheffield Utd which meant Leicester got relegated. Next season the joys of Tranmere, Huddersfield and Northampton beckon.

In other news, the Red team won in Colnbrook – beating the Blue team.

In other other news, the Blue team smashed the Red team all over the park …
