Just listening to Radio Berkshire this morning – two comments start me off answering back to the radio….

1) Someone emails in and says “If the Government want us to buy energy efficient light bulbs, why are they so expensive?”

2) Andrew Peach says “Today, in 1873, was the day that British Rail first put toilets on trains”

Let’s briefly consider both of those. Somehow, there is a view that the Govt has anything to do with prices – or an assumption that maybe they should. Was this why it got read out?!

Secondly, British Rail didn’t introduce toilets on trains, they didn’t exist until the railways were nationalised in 1948. I would guess that if the prior private companies hadn’t put toilets on trains, they wouldn’t be provided today (on the shorter routes anyway). The state of the toilets on the trains I’ve travelled on in recent years has been abominable.
