Comic Academy does Fame Relief

Posted by davidburbage on March 12, 2007

I happened across a very small portion of this programme (or something like it) tonight where “celebrities” sing and people vote on those premium rate lines.

Quite apart from the ‘quality’ aspect of the programming, the little text at the bottom of the screen says “calls cost 50p – at least 34p goes to Comic Relief”.

Absolutely amazing. We are here, apparently to raise money by using phone voting lines, and BT or whichever operator is taking a 33% tax on the phone calls. One of the big problems in charitable donations is usually ensuring the vast bulk of donation gets to the end cause, but here, by design, the method of donation is actually giving 33%, before you start thinking about where the money will go, to a phone operator for a very-low-marginal-cost premium phone payment operation. The BBC should get all 50p of the 50p donated.
