I am lambasted by Harry Parker in the Observer today, apparently ‘plumbing depths’ in comparing Wandsworth with the Royal Borough. Heinous crime, it appears, for local Councillors to bother to see how other Councils deliver quality services.

Wandsworth is clearly different. Crime, drugs and serious issues of poverty and deprivation mean that more grant is available to inner London Boroughs. It doesn’t mean it’s necessarily fair to the Borough’s grant, however!

But we visited Wandsworth to see how they keep their tax low year on year, not to find out how much grant they receive. If we’re getting to any new depths it is to depths of understanding how excellent Councils get that way.

I am happy to report that we have learnt plenty from our visit to an excellent Conservative Council. Furthermore, I am sorry to report to Harry that further visits to other excellent Conservative Councils may be called for, and I apologise to him in advance for that, too!
